AAP Drops Plan To Burn Copies Of Delhi Postings Orders Says Matter In Court

AAP Drops Plan To Burn Copies Of Delhi Postings Orders Says Matter In Court

Hours after declaring to burn copies of the Centre's Delhi ordinance at its party office here, the AAP on Friday desisted from making such a move as it said the matter was sub judice.

Notably, the AAP-led Delhi government on Friday moved the Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of the ordinance on control of services, saying it is an "unconstitutional exercise of executive fiat" that attempts to "override" the top court and the basic structure of the Constitution. Besides quashing of the ordinance, the government also sought an interim stay on it.

Earlier in the day, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will burn copies of the ordinance at the party office in central Delhi on July 3.

Addressing a press conference, party chief spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj said copies of the ordinance will be burned across the 70 assembly constituencies of the national capital.

In a statement late evening, the party said, "AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal and the senior leadership of AAP will neither burn nor participate in the protests and agitations against the Delhi Ordinance on July 3 as proposed earlier since the matter is now sub judice in the Hon''ble Supreme Court. All the programmes are cancelled." Delhi minister Bharadwaj accused the Centre of trying to take "illegal" control of Delhi through the "black ordinance".

The party had on June 11 organised a 'maha rally' against the ordinance.

The Centre on May 19 brought the ordinance to create an authority for the transfer and posting of IAS and DANICS officers in Delhi, with the AAP government calling the move a circumvention of the Supreme Court verdict on control of services.

The ordinance, which came a week after the Supreme Court handed over the control of services in Delhi, excluding police, public order and land, to the elected government, seeks to set up a National Capital Civil Service Authority for the transfer of and disciplinary proceedings against Group-A officers.

Transfer and postings of all officers of the Delhi government were under the executive control of the Lieutenant Governor before the May 11 verdict of the Supreme Court.

Rajasthan Lamb With Holy Number Fetches Rs 1 Crore Bid. Rejected.

Rajasthan Lamb With Holy Number Fetches Rs 1 Crore Bid. Rejected.

A shepherd in Rajasthan's Churu district has refused to sell his lamb, which has an Urdu writing on its belly, despite receiving an offer of Rs 1 crore.

The lamb reportedly has the numeral '786', considered sacred by Muslims in the Indian subcontinent, written in Urdu on its belly.

Raju Singh, the shepherd, did not understand what the number meant but after consulting with members of the Muslim community in his village, he learned that it was the Urdu numeral for '786'. This number is considered to be sacred in Islam, and it is often used as a way to invoke the blessings of God.

Mr Singh said that the lamb was born last year and he has so far received offers of Rs 70 lakh and Rs 1 crore for it but decided against selling the animal as he considers it "very dear" to him.

Ever since the lamb's price was estimated to be crores of rupees, it is now kept separate from the other lambs in the herd and is fed a special diet of pomegranates, papayas, millets, and green vegetables.

Due to its high value, Mr Singh has taken special measures to protect the lamb and keeps it inside his house with his family.

US House Panel Critical of Twitter Privacy Investigation to Question FTC Chair at Hearing

US House Panel Critical of Twitter Privacy Investigation to Question FTC Chair at Hearing

US Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan is set to testify on July 13 before the House Judiciary Committee led by Republicans who have sharply criticized her leadership of the antitrust enforcement agency, the committee, and commission confirmed on Friday.

This will be her first appearance before the committee since Republicans assumed control.

Republicans have been especially critical of the FTC's privacy investigation into Twitter since it was purchased by billionaire Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

In March, the FTC confirmed it was conducting an investigation into Twitter's privacy practices. The agency has been concerned whether Twitter had the staffing to abide by a May 2022 settlement with the FTC in which it agreed to improve its privacy practices.

In April, the committee subpoenaed Khan for documents related to the Twitter privacy probe following Musk's $44 billion (roughly Rs. 3,61,687 crore) purchase of the social media company in October.

House Judiciary Committee chair Jim Jordan suggested in a June 8 letter "there is an unjustified approximate one-year gap in the FTC's actions with respect to Twitter" and added it was reasonable to conclude neither the prior chair nor Khan "seriously planned to take action against Twitter "until political pressure arose given Mr. Musk's impending acquisition."

Jordan in February also questioned the FTC's plans to adopt a new rule to ban noncompete clauses for workers and its approach to the merger of Illumina and Grail.

San Diego-based Illumina, which specializes in gene sequencing, is appealing an FTC order that said the company's $7.1 billion (roughly Rs. 58,200,830 crore) acquisition of Grail will curb competition in the cancer-testing market. Illumina has denied the allegations.

The FTC, which typically has five commissions including two from the minority party, currently has just three Democratic commissioners after Christine Wilson stepped down at the end of March.

Khan, an antitrust researcher focused on Big Tech's immense market power, vowed to reinvigorate antitrust enforcement after she joined the FTC in June 2021 and was named chair.

This week the FTC sued Amazon.com accusing it of enrolling millions of consumers into its paid subscription Amazon Prime service without their consent and making it hard for them to cancel.

Politico first reported the plans for the hearing.

Murder Accused Punches Lawyer In US Flashes 'Killer' Etched On Teeth As He Is Sentenced

Murder Accused Punches Lawyer In US Flashes 'Killer' Etched On Teeth As He Is Sentenced

Florida man, Joseph Zieler, who was convicted of murdering an 11-year-old girl and her 32-year-old babysitter in 1990, punched his own lawyer on Monday after he was sentenced to death for double murders. The 61-year-old reportedly had the word "Killer" etched onto his teeth at the volatile sentencing.

The video of the incident has surfaced on the internet. It shows Zieler appeared to gesture for his attorney, Kevin Shirley, to come close so he could whisper something to him without the microphones picking it up. Despite being surrounded by two cops, Zieler punched his lawyer Kevin Shirley.

He was immediately tackled to the ground by the surrounding officers.

The judge asked the lawyer if he was ok, and he calmly responded, "I'm fine. I used to box, I've taken a lot better shots than that."

According to Independent report, Joseph Zieler was found guilty in May for the 1990 murders of 11-year-old Robin Cornell and her babysitter Lisa Story, 32. The victims were found beaten, raped and suffocated to death by the child's mother, but it would be more than two decades before an arrest was made in the case.

In 2016, investigators in Cape Coral, Florida linked Zieler when forensic tests revealed that semen found at the scene matched his DNA.

He was arrested in 2016 and seven years later, a grand jury delivered a guilty verdict and recommended that he should be sentenced to death for his crimes, the media outlet reported.

Blog: Blog: Back To School With Artificial Intelligence

Blog: Blog: Back To School With Artificial Intelligence

The emergence of Generative AI, defined by its ability to generate novel, human-like output, will mean that a large majority of students currently in school will experience a work and life environment very different from what they are used to.

This paradigm shift is likely to cause huge realignments in society. According to a recent report by Goldman Sachs, upto 300 million jobs across the world are exposed to automation.

This has far-reaching implications for India. It is incumbent upon policymakers and regulators in India to rapidly come up with a framework that will allow our future generations to be competitive.

To navigate this challenge successfully, we need to approach the challenge at multiple levels.

First, we need to design a curriculum in which AI and Data Science are taught in an age-appropriate manner. Second, we need to rapidly upskill teachers and coaches to impart these skills to students. Third, we need to enable much closer interaction between the industry and private sector, schools, and regulators to update the curriculum frequently.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), one of the largest education boards in the country, is already taking steps for this. The CBSE collaborates with various industries, organisations, and institutions to develop and update the curriculum for skill-based subjects. These collaborations ensure that the curriculum is aligned with industry requirements and reflects the latest trends and advancements in skill-based domains.

Schools will play a crucial role in bridging the gap between the current education system and the future needs of industry. Teachers must upskill themselves through the CBSE's training programmes, specifically focused on using these new skills. This way, skill education will contribute to the overall economic growth and development of a nation by creating a highly skilled and competitive workforce.

Many private schools in India have already engaged AI implementation champions and coaches. According to Soumya Iyer - AI Implementation Head at the Sanskriti Group of Schools, Pune, "Artificial Intelligence and other such disruptive technologies will inevitably bring large changes to how people will work and what professions will still be relevant. As educators, our responsibility is to give our children a toolkit to thrive in the future".

Introducing students to AI is necessary but it is not sufficient, as there is a huge element of unpredictability about the extent and timing of the changes that AI shall bring.

In order to come up with the right solutions, the problems and challenges we are trying to solve must be framed correctly. Regulators and schools need to ask what capabilities are likely to overcome the obsolescence that disruptive technologies shall bring.

The role of a good education is to allow children how to learn, not what to learn. The consensus of most global experts is that there are some skills that will always be relevant; they are creative and original thinking, good communication and decision-making skills. To help equip our children with these skills, we must go back to the first principles of thinking.

Decision-making skills are the most important to focus on. This is done best when parents and teachers work as partners to encourage children to understand the connection between effort and reward. Giving children opportunities to make decisions from an early stage is vital.

To prepare our next generation for the future, it is important for policymakers, schools and parents to work in tandem and create a roadmap that frames our societal goals correctly. Even though this paradigm shift heralding the age of AI might seem daunting, humanity has overcome and creatively solved several existential challenges in the past. It is adapting against these challenges that make us human. Einstein said this most simply when he observed, "Human Spirit must prevail over technology".

For EV Batteries Lithium Iron Phosphate Becoming Material of Choice

For EV Batteries Lithium Iron Phosphate Becoming Material of Choice

As the auto industry scrambles to produce more affordable electric vehicles, whose most expensive components are the batteries, lithium iron phosphate is gaining traction as the EV battery material of choice.

The popularity of the chemical compound known as LFP is due partly to environmental and geopolitical concerns. But technological advances have also reduced the performance gap with more widely used materials such as nickel and cobalt.

LFP, embraced by EV industry leader Tesla two years ago, has sparked new interest especially in the US, where a clutch of domestic and overseas manufacturers has pledged more than $11 billion (nearly Rs. 90,200 crore) in new production facilities.

Overseas, two of the world's largest automakers, Toyota Motor and Hyundai Motor, have both announced plans in the past week to equip their future vehicles with LFP batteries, but have not disclosed plans for the US.

“LFP is less expensive than cobalt and nickel, and all the minerals can be obtained here in North America (which means) much lower transportation costs and a more secure supply chain,” said Stanley Whittingham, professor at Binghamton University in New York and a 2019 Nobel laureate for his work on lithium ion batteries.

The addition of manganese, a staple ingredient in rival nickel cobalt manganese (NCM) battery cells, has enabled lithium iron phosphate cells to hold more energy than previously, providing EVs with more range — up to 450 miles (724 km) on a single charge, Toyota said recently.

Michigan-based Our Next Energy, which is building a $1.6 billion (nearly Rs. 13,100 crore) battery manufacturing complex in Van Buren Township, is a proponent of LFP, according to founder and chief executive Mujeeb Ijaz, because “the materials are more abundant and sustainable, with far less risk” of fire.

“We've also demonstrated that you can match the range of cobalt cells with no compromise,” he said.

Tesla is among the automakers leading the quest in markets outside of China to provide lower-priced EVs — in Tesla's case, targeting a base price of around $25,000 (nearly Rs. 20 lakh). The use of LFP batteries should help Tesla and rivals to achieve that goal, experts say.

Ford Motor aims to open a $3.5 billion (nearly Rs. 28,700 crore) LFP cell manufacturing plant in western Michigan, leveraging technology licensed from China's CATL, the world's largest EV battery maker. The goal, Ford CEO Jim Farley said in February, is to lower the automaker's cell costs to less than $70 (nearly Rs. 5,800 crore) a kilowatt-hour, from more than $100 (nearly Rs. 8,000)/kWh for current NCM cells.

More than 90 percent of LFP materials and components still come from China, said battery expert Shirley Meng, a University of Chicago professor and head of Argonne National Laboratory's Collaborative Center for Energy Storage Science.

The rapidly increasing adoption of LFP by EV manufacturers including Tesla and Hyundai suggests those companies “are not ready to decouple from China," Meng said.

'Attractive proposition'

Battery expert Lukasz Bednarski, author of the 2021 book “Lithium: The Global Race for Battery Dominance and the New Energy Revolution,” believes automakers' interest in building lower-priced EVs could be one of the drivers behind LFP's rising popularity.

“LFP provides good enough performance at a lower cost, which makes it an attractive proposition for EVs for the middle class,” he said.

Bednarski added that the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) provides incentives “for the development of the whole battery chain (with no) preference for LFP chemistry.”

Rising investment in LFP manufacturing facilities in the United States is coming not just from domestic companies like Ford and ONE.

Battery makers from Norway, Israel, South Korea and even China have committed to building US facilities to produce LFP materials, components and batteries, some of which will be used not in vehicles, but in large energy storage systems.

“LFP was invented in the US and first commercialised here,” said Whittingham. He said this happened before Chinese companies such as BYD and CATL “moved fast” to improve and deploy the technology, mainly in EVs.

Now, given its continued cost advantage over NCM, he added, LFP “should be used in all grid storage systems and lower-cost cars.”

Heavy exchange of fire took place between the security forces and the armed insurgents in different places of Imphal East and Kangpokpi districts on Friday, the army said.

Unofficial reports said that at least two people including a woman were injured in the firing. No official confirmation has come on the injuries.

The Army said that a group of armed insurgents sneaked into the Yaingangpokpi (YKPI) area in Imphal East district towards the hill side on Friday afternoon.

"Miscreants fired from automatic weapons towards Urangpat and Gwaltabi villages. Security forces deployed in these vacant villages responded in a calibrated manner to avoid any collateral damage,' Army sources said.

"A large group of women were part of the mobs at YKPI and Seijang (both in Imphal East district) areas preventing movement of additional security forces into the area," the army said. Columns have moved on foot to cordon the area where the incident took place.

The Army said the area is under surveillance by own columns & Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and the situation is under control & being closely monitored.

A statement from the Army said Additional columns have been inducted in the area and joint operations against armed insurgents are under progress according to the latest information from the two districts.

Friday's gun battle comes a day after two soldiers were injured when armed insurgents fired at them at North Boljang in Imphal West district and recovery of an INSAS Light Machine Gun and a highly explosive mortar bomb in Imphal East and Imphal West districts on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Army, Assam Rifles and various other central and state security forces have been continuing combing operations in different parts of the state. Search operations were also conducted to recover the arms and ammunition from insurgents and arrest those involved in violence.

The incidents came on a day when Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh visited Kwakta Sericulture farm located at Kwakta, Bishnupur District and inspected the site for arrangement of temporary housing for persons displaced due to the recent violence happened in the State.

"They Agreed To Get Rahul Gandhi Married": Anurag Thakur Jabs Opposition Meet

"They Agreed To Get Rahul Gandhi Married": Anurag Thakur Jabs Opposition Meet

Union minister and BJP leader Anurag Thakur took a swipe at the opposition parties' meeting in Patna on Friday, saying a key resolution adopted by the leaders was about the marriage of Rahul Gandhi "much to the annoyance of mummy ji".

Anurag Thakur described the meeting as a "drama" that was being staged ahead of the Lok Sabha elections next year and exuded confidence about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's third consecutive victory.

"The stage is getting decorated ahead of the 2024 elections, the artistes have started gathering, the characters are being finalised. The drama will play out, vows will be exchanged for supporting each other, people will have a good laugh and Modiji will take oath as the Prime Minister for the third time after winning a massive majority," Mr Thakur said on Twitter.

Listing what he called the outcome of the meeting of 17 opposition parties, Mr Thakur said: "Nitish Kumar not acceptable as convenor. Proposal of Rahul Gandhi's marriage passed. Mummy is very annoyed. Will address a press conference but will not answer questions."

"Neither do their hearts meet nor do they have any hope of getting any seat. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal who threatened to derail the meeting slipped away quietly after the meeting. They cannot tolerate peace in Kashmir and dream of bringing back Article 370 to strengthen the roots of terrorism. New doors of political tourism have opened. After relishing 'litti chokha' and rasgulla in Bihar, they will now meet in Shimla," he said.

Leaders of 17 opposition parties met in Patna on Friday to explore ways for forging an alliance for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections to take on the BJP.

How Opposition's Mega Meet Turned A Congress Vs AAP Match

How Opposition's Mega Meet Turned A Congress Vs AAP Match

The much-hyped Patna meeting on which opposition's hopes for 2024 are riding, hit an impasse today over Aam Aadmi Party's insistence on unanimous support over Delhi bureaucrats issue. The four-hour session, held at the official residence of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, saw high drama, with the Congress -- which refuses to commit itself -- reading out a 'rap sheet' of AAP.

The two parties have been at loggerheads for years, and with AAP growing at the cost of Congress in Gujarat, Punjab and other states, many leaders of the Grand Old Party are not too keen to sign up to help it.

AAP has dug in its heels, declaring that it would not be part of the united opposition unless Congress publicly opposes the Centre's executive order taking away the control over bureaucrats in Delhi. It wanted the Congress to spell out its stand at today's meeting.

The Congress hit out at AAP's "either-or" stance. Party chief Mallikarjun Kharge read out several instances of AAP's provocative statements against Congress, sources said.

Mr Kharge also mentioned AAP's yesterday's statement, claiming it has "vitiated the environment" for today's meeting. Congress leaders showed AAP spokesman Priyanka Kakkar's allegation of the Congress entering a deal with the BJP.

Mr Kejriwal said she was new and the statement was given without his approval.

Mr Kharge, sources said, pointed out that AAP regularly attends opposition strategy sessions and questioned the need for a different mechanism to take a call on the Ordinance. He also questioned the need to make it a pre-condition for an alliance against the BJP.

Sources said senior leader KC Venugopal, who was also present at the meet, weighed in, saying one cannot "put a gun to Congress' head and demand negotiations".

Mr Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, however, said there was "no question" of supporting anything moved by BJP. But there is a process in the party for taking such decisions and it will take 10 days before the next parliament session.

The assembled leaders, meanwhile, started weighing in on the issue. While Nitish Kumar was in favour of the Congress making its position clear, National Conference chief Omar Abdullah pointed out that the meeting was veering off course.

"We have not come here to discuss your issue, but the issues to how to stop the BJP," sources quoted him as saying.

In the end, Mr Kejriwal appeared isolated as most leaders advised him not to make it a prestige issue.

The next meeting will be held on July 10 or 12, when the parties will try to formulate a strategy for the polls.

Video: Mamata Banerjee Touches Lalu Yadav's Feet Ahead Of Opposition Meet

Video: Mamata Banerjee Touches Lalu Yadav's Feet Ahead Of Opposition Meet

Mamata Banerjee today met with Bihar politician Lalu Yadav and touched his feet in a warm interaction a day before a mega opposition meet in Patna.

Opposition parties would “fight like a family and take on the BJP one to one," the Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress leader said on the opposition meeting called by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who has been at the forefront of moves to unite parties against the BJP ahead of the 2024 national election.

Mamata Banerjee spoke around the time her Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal warned that his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) would “walk out” of the meeting if the Congress did not support it in its fight against the Centre's ordinance on the control of services in Delhi.

Ms Banerjee deflected questions on Mr Kejriwal's ultimatum, and also on her own rivalry with the Congress and Left in her state.

"I cannot say what will happen at tomorrow's meeting. But I am certain we are all here to fight the BJP together, like a family, one-to-one," she told reporters outside the home of Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav, where she met with his parents Lalu Yadav and Rabri Devi, both RJD leaders and former Chief Ministers.

"I have great respect for Lalu-ji. The poor man was sent to jail and had to spend a lot of time in the hospital," Ms Banerjee said.

She also shared a light-hearted anecdote. "Once, when both Lalu ji and I were MPs, he was stating on the floor of Parliament that prices of all vegetables, potatoes, onions, were rising. I got up and asked what about the price of Rabri (a sweet)," she said, punning on the politician's wife's name.

"Lalu-ji replied, Rabri is the most precious," she grinned.

"He (Lalu Yadav) looks strong enough to take on the BJP," the Chief Minister said.

Ms Banerjee, who is in Patna for tomorrow's meeting, arrived with her nephew Abhishek Banerjee, an MP.

Google Filed Complaint Against Microsoft for Dominant Cloud Services Position: Report

Google Filed Complaint Against Microsoft for Dominant Cloud Services Position: Report

Alphabet's Google formally filed a complaint to the US Federal Trade Commission on Tuesday saying Microsoft used its dominant position in enterprise software to push customers towards its cloud services, The Information reported on Wednesday.

Microsoft used the licensing terms in its Office 365 productivity software to lock customers into separate contracts with its Azure cloud server business, Google's complaint said, according to the report.

There is intense rivalry between the two US tech giants in the fast-growing, multi-billion-dollar cloud computing business, where Google trails market leaders Amazon.com and Microsoft.

The sector has recently drawn greater regulatory scrutiny, including in the United States and in Britain, because of the dominance of a few players and its increasingly critical role as more and more companies shift their services to the cloud.

In March, Google Cloud had accused Microsoft of anti-competitive cloud computing practices and criticized imminent deals with several European cloud vendors, saying these do not solve broader concerns about its licensing terms.

Earlier this year, the FTC had said it is seeking information from the public on the business practices of cloud computing companies, including details on their market power, competition and potential security issues.

Google and Microsoft did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment, while the FTC declined to comment.

2 Civic Engineers File Complaint Of Assault Against Maharashtra MLA

2 Civic Engineers File Complaint Of Assault Against Maharashtra MLA

Two engineers of the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation near Mumbai on Wednesday submitted a complaint to police against local MLA Geeta Jain, accusing her of assaulting them and obstructing the performance of official duty.

A video of Geeta Jain, an independent MLA, slapping junior engineer Shubham Patil and abusing him and his colleague Sanjay Soni in full public view on Tuesday for allegedly undertaking the demolition of an illegal shanty had gone viral.

In the complaint filed with Kashimira police, the two engineers said contrary to her allegation that the house was pulled down ahead of monsoon, no demolition has taken place yet.

The officials had planned to pull down the illegal shanty of Rajiv Kumar Singh in Penkar Pada area of Pandurang Wadi on June 14, but no action was taken following a phone call from MLA Jain, the complaint said.

On June 20, the MLA had asked Assistant Commissioner Sachin Bacchav to come for a site visit, and as he was busy he deputed the two engineers, it said.

The MLA, however, picked a quarrel with them, manhandled them and also slapped Mr Patil, the complaint said, seeking action against her.

Mr Singh's house had not been demolished, the complaint said, alleging that he and his mother were allotted alternative houses in 2018 which they rented out and were living in the illegal shanty.

No First Information Report has been registered in the case so far, police said.

The MLA, who is an independent legislator supporting the ruling Shiv Sena-BJP alliance in Maharashtra, had told a news channel on Tuesday evening that she did not regret her action.

In a letter written to the municipal commissioner, Jain demanded suspension of the two civic engineers, accusing them of pulling down Mr Singh's house and throwing his children and wife out of the house on June 16.

They violated the government direction that such demolitions should not be undertaken during monsoon, she claimed.

In a bizarre yet funny incident, a toddler took away the corner flag during an ongoing women's football match in Ireland. The incident only momentarily stopped the game, but it resulted in a hilarious video that went viral online.

The video shows the game between the Cork City Women and Dublin's DLR Waves was in the 44th minute when a curious toddler pulled up a corner flag and started playing with it.

After that, the players came to the corner and requested that he return the flag. After a few minutes, the boy returned the flag, and the match continued.

The official Cork City Women account also tweeted the funny moment and wrote, "Back underway here after a brief stoppage... a toddler had run off with the corner flag."

The All-Island Cup game was ultimately won by Cork City 2-1.

Corner flags, which are crucial for defining boundaries in football, are set in each corner of the field to designate the margins of the playing area.

Food Delivery Agent In China Jumps Off Bridge To Save Drowning Woman Rewarded Rs 9 Lakh

Food Delivery Agent In China Jumps Off Bridge To Save Drowning Woman Rewarded Rs 9 Lakh

A food delivery rider in China is being hailed as a hero after he jumped 12 metres off a bridge to save a drowning woman, South China Morning Post reported. The incident happened on June 13, when Peng Qinglin spotted the woman struggling in the Qiantang River while delivering food to a customer.

In the videos that have surfaced on Chinese social media websites, the 31-year-old man can be seen climbing over the railings of the 12-meter-high bridge and jumping in the water, in an attempt to rescue the woman. He swam towards the woman and brought her to a mounted ladder nearby.

Soon after, police and lifeboats arrived on the scene and completed the rescue within 10 minutes. The woman survived the ordeal and is currently in the hospital for observation.

In an interview with China Blue News, Mr. Qinglin said he was initially afraid due to the bridge's height, but eventually decided to jump into the water.

''It was quite high, and my legs were trembling. However, if I didn't jump, she might not have survived. Nothing is more precious than life,” he told China Blue News in an interview after the incident.

A police officer who was at the scene said that the first words Mr. Qinglin uttered after he returned to dry land were ''My delivery is going to be late'', Straits Times reported. Fearing fines for the delays, he quickly finished his deliveries. Thankfully, the company he worked for understood the situation and did not hold him responsible for the time lost.

Meanwhile, the video of the incident has gone viral, with people hailing Mr. Qinglin 's quick thinking and bravery.

Hangzhou police authorities awarded him the ''Good Samaritan'' title and a cash prize of 30,000 yuan (Rs 3,43,180) for his bravery. His company also presented him with a cash award of 50,000 yuan (RS 5,71,826) and the opportunity to study in college for free.

''I'm just a delivery guy like many others. If I meet someone in danger, I will definitely lend a helping hand,'' he said.

Meanwhile, the woman he saved is in good condition and expressed deep gratitude to him. She revealed that she wanted to drown herself because "life's stresses were too overwhelming."

However, Mr. Qinglin paid a physical price for his bravery as he suffered compression fractures when he hit the surface of the water.

No surgery was required but doctors have advised him to be hospitalised for seven to 10 days.

"Will It Adversely Impact Hindus?" Uddhav Thackeray On Uniform Civil Code

Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday said the Uniform Civil Code for all citizens is welcome but wondered if its implementation would affect Hindus adversely.

Mr Thackeray also took potshots at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the state-level plenary of Shiv Sena (UBT) office-bearers held here, the first since the split in Shiv Sena last year.

"We welcome the Uniform Civil Code for all but would it adversely affect Hindus? If they (BJP) could not implement the ban on cow slaughter in the entire country, how can the UCC be implemented?" he asked.

The Law Commission recently said it has decided to look at the need for a UCC afresh and seek the views of stakeholders, which include the members of the public and religious organisations.

In US Unprovoked Bear Fatally Attacks Man Drinking Coffee In His Yard

In US Unprovoked Bear Fatally Attacks Man Drinking Coffee In His Yard

A 66-year-old man in the United States was mauled to death by a black bear that attacked him unprovoked while he was drinking his morning coffee on Friday. In a Facebook post, the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office said that the man, identified as Steven Jackson, died in Arizona during the attack and the bear too was killed by a neighbour who was trying to save the man's life.

"From multiple witness accounts and preliminary investigation of the scene, Mr. Jackson had been sitting having coffee at a table on his property where he was building a home," the sheriff's office said in the post, adding it was a remote, heavily wooded area.

"It appears that a male black bear attacked Mr. Jackson, taking him unaware, and dragged him approximately 75 feet down an embankment," the officials added.

As per the social media post, neighbours who heard the 66-year-old screaming for help tried to deter the wild animal by shouting and honking their car horns, but the bear refused to let go until one local fired his rifle and killed the bear.

"Unfortunately, by that time Mr Jackson has succumbed to his horrible injuries," the sheriff's office said.

Also Read | US Man Dies By Suicide After Ex-Girlfriend's "Graphic, Heinous" Text Messages: Cops

Officials from Arizona Game and Fish believe that the bear's aggression was a "predatory" response. This kind of attack is "highly uncommon and unusual, with only one other fatal attack known since the mid-1980s." the sheriff's office stated.

"At first glance there did not appear to be anything on the site that would have precipitated a attack by the bear, such as food, a cooking site or access to water," it added.

Further, according to CNN, officials explained that the incident did not seem like a female bear protecting her cubs, but law enforcement is still gathering the facts about what occurred.

"We have had no other reports that would indicate that the public is in danger. Please do not shoot any bear unless there is an immediate threat. It is against the law to shoot any bear unless there is a threat to your safety or the safety of others," said the sheriff's office in another post.

Meta Rolls Back Policy to Curb COVID-19 Misinformation on Facebook Instagram

Meta Rolls Back Policy to Curb COVID-19 Misinformation on Facebook Instagram

Meta Platforms said on Friday a policy that was put in place to curb the spread of misinformation related to COVID-19 on Facebook and Instagram would no longer be in effect globally.

Social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter came under immense pressure to tackle misinformation related to the pandemic, including false claims about vaccines, prompting them to take stringent measures.

Earlier in 2021, Facebook said it took down 1.3 billion fake accounts between October and December and removed more than 12 million pieces of content on COVID-19 and vaccines that global health experts flagged as misinformation.

The Facebook parent in July last year sought the opinion of its independent oversight board on changes to its current approach, given the improvement in authentic sources of information and general awareness around COVID.

However, Meta said on Friday that the rules would still stand in countries, which still have a COVID-19 public health emergency declaration, and the company would continue to remove content that violates its coronavirus misinformation policies.

"We are consulting with health experts to understand which claims and categories of misinformation could continue to pose this risk," Meta said in a blog post.

Earlier in November, Twitter also rolled back its COVID-19 misinformation policy.

In another recent development, Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, has started verified service in India at a monthly subscription price of Rs. 699 for mobile apps, the company said on Wednesday. Meta is planning to roll out verified service on the web in the coming months at a subscription price of Rs. 599 per month.

Huawei Ban in EU Opposed by China ZTE Demands Equal Treatment

Huawei Ban in EU Opposed by China ZTE Demands Equal Treatment

China firmly opposes some EU countries' ban on Huawei and said the European Commission has no legal basis nor factual evidence to prohibit the Chinese telecom giant, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said on Friday.

ZTE, also singled out by EU industry chief Thierry Breton as a high-risk vendor, criticised the move to ban its equipment in the Commission's network and in EU countries.

Breton on Thursday urged more EU countries to join the 10 that have restricted or banned Huawei and ZTE from their 5G telecoms networks, citing risks to the bloc's collective security.

He said both companies will also be banned from EU-funded projects.

Huawei has criticised the move saying this was not based on a verified, transparent, objective and technical assessment of 5G networks.

Publicly singling out an individual entity as a high-risk vendor without legal basis is against principles of free trade, a Huawei spokesperson said.

"As an economic operator in the EU, Huawei holds procedural and substantial rights and should be protected under the EU and Member States' laws as well as their international commitments," the person said.

ZTE said it should be treated just like its rivals.

"ZTE's only request is to be treated fairly and objectively by regulators and legislators - just like any other vendor," the company said in an email.

"We welcome external assessment and scrutiny of our products by regulators and technical supervisory bodies at any time."

Several countries including Germany have been slow to implement the EU's security measures for 5G networks agreed three years ago to curb the use of "high-risk vendors" such as Huawei due to concerns about possible sabotage or espionage.

Telecom operators across Europe have been using Huawei gear because they were cheaper than rivals' and work as good, making it difficult for companies to choose costlier options.

CBI Files Chargesheet In Rs 250 Crore Pulses Scam After 17 Years

CBI Files Chargesheet In Rs 250 Crore Pulses Scam After 17 Years

The CBI has filed a charge sheet in the infamous Rs 250-crore pulses scam involving the export of 60,000 metric tonne of pulses despite a government ban in 2006-07, nearly 17 years after a case was first registered in the matter, officials said.

The agency's investigation remained stalled during the period, with letters rogatory sent to three countries failing to elicit timely responses.

A letter rogatory - a judicial request sent by a court to a foreign country seeking its assistance in sharing information in a case - to New Zealand is still pending.

In its charge sheet filed recently before a special court, the Central Bureau of Investigation named Jet King, its owner Shyam Sunder Jain, Naresh Kumar Jain, and one Prashant Sethi.

It is alleged that Jet King circumvented the government ban on pulse export in collusion with some UAE-based companies by manipulating a backdated Letter of Credit issued by a Cook Islands bank.

The CBI has invoked IPC sections related to criminal conspiracy, cheating, and forgery against the accused, in addition to provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

In 2007, opposition leaders pointed out that pulses were being exported based on backdated documents, undermining the then UPA government's attempts to control the spiralling prices of pulses in the country.

Afghanistan's Taliban Officials Attend Annual Peace Summit In Norway

Afghanistan's Taliban Officials Attend Annual Peace Summit In Norway

Officials from Afghanistan's Taliban administration travelled to Norway this week for meetings with civil society and diplomats at a peace forum, the Norwegian foreign minister said on Thursday.

The visit took place amidst a severe humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan following 20 years of war and as many countries have pulled back on aid after orders from the Taliban that stopped many Afghan female humanitarian staff from working.

"Norway invited three civil servant-level individuals working for the Afghan de facto authorities in Kabul to this year's Oslo Forum. They met Afghan civil society and representatives from other countries to discuss the situation in Afghanistan," Norwegian Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt told Reuters.

The two-day meeting near Oslo is an annual summit on conflict and peace diplomacy that ended Wednesday.

The Taliban administration has not been formally recognised by any foreign government since taking over the country in 2021 as foreign troops withdrew.

A UN official said the United Nation's Secretary General's Special Representative to Afghansitan Roza Otunbayeva attended the closed door meeting.

Though some senior Taliban leaders are normally prevented from leaving the country due to UN travel bans, other officials are able to travel or receive exemptions to do so and have held meetings with officials abroad including in Qatar, Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates.

In 2022, the Taliban's acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi attended a meeting in Oslo.

"Isolating Afghanistan now will be unfortunate, both for the Afghan people and for the international community. It could worsen the situation in Afghanistan, and it could let groups such as the ISKP get a stronger foothold in the country. This would also pose a security risk for Europe," Huitfeldt said, referring to Islamic State.

A spokesperson for the Taliban-run foreign ministry did not respond to request for comment. Afghan broadcaster Tolo News reported officials from the foreign, defence and interior ministries had travelled to Norway.

Crane Operator Dead As Under-Construction Flyover Collapses In Delhi

Crane Operator Dead As Under-Construction Flyover Collapses In Delhi

A 35-year-old excavator operator died on Wednesday when a portion of an under-construction flyover near National Highway-48 in southwest Delhi collapsed and fell on the heavy vehicle, police said.

The incident took place in Smalkha, Kapeshera, Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest) Manoj C said, adding two persons, including site supervisor Injmam Hussain, 30, and site manager Rohit, 35, have been arrested.

The elevated portion of the Dwarka Expressway link road is under construction at the site, he said.

The DCP said victim Shakeel of Bharatpur, Rajasthan, was driving the excavator which was crushed under the debris.

A case under relevant provisions of the law has been registered.

Later, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said a three-member team of bridge experts has been constituted to look into the incident. The fire department said information about the incident was received around 10 am, following which three fire tenders were rushed to the spot.

Shakeel's relatives said he was the sole breadwinner of his family.

"We got to know about the incident in the morning and rushed to the spot. When there was no support under the flyover, then nobody should have been allowed to stand or work under it. We want justice for Shakeel. He has two kids and four sisters," Sattar, Shakeel's uncle, said.

According to an official statement from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, under erection span P8-P9 of the flyover, which is part of Shiv Murti interchange on the Dwarka Expressway, toppled around 9.30 am.

A team of officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and bridge experts immediately rushed to the site. As per initial reports, the span was being erected and it was reportedly resting on temporary stools and hydraulic jacks, it said.

"The span was pre-stressed on June 2. The work on this flyover commenced with traffic diversion of NH-48 on March 18 for a period of 90 days. In this duration, 13 spans were erected," the statement said.

As per site reports, prima facie it appears to be a case of mechanical failure as structural elements of superstructure and substructure are in sound condition, it stated.

To ascertain reasons of incident, a three-member team of bridge experts has been constituted. "Two members of team are already inspected the site and the third member will reach the site on Thursday morning. The committee would examine all issues in details and submit report in four weeks," the statement added.

'He Declassified The Classified Documents': Trump Lawyer's Defence

'He Declassified The Classified Documents': Trump Lawyer's Defence

Donald Trump's lawyer hinted Sunday at the indicted ex-president's defense strategy in the classified documents case, saying the files were de-classified or personal mementos from his time in office and that the accusations are politically motivated.

Trump is set to appear Tuesday in federal court in Miami on 37 charges, including violations of the Espionage act, making false statements and conspiracy regarding his mishandling of classified material, the latest bout of legal jeopardy facing the rebellious Republican.

One of his lawyers, Alina Habba, argued Trump had done "nothing wrong" and would not take a plea deal to minimize fallout from the case as he seeks his party's nomination for the 2024 election.

"He would never admit guilt, because there was nothing wrong with declassifying documents," Habba told the talk show "Fox News Sunday."

"This is completely politically motivated. It's election interference at its best."

Habba also portrayed Trump's opposition to federal agents rifling through his boxes during a search at his Mar-a-Lago home as frustration over officials going through his personal effects.

"He has every right to have classified documents that he declassified... things that are mementos, things that he has a right to take.

"So if I'm someone with documents that I have a right to have as the president who left the White House, do I want people rummaging through my personal items? No," she added.

But the US attorney general in the final year of Trump's presidency, Bill Barr, said his former boss faces "solid counts" filed by the Department of Justice and that Trump is no victim of a witch hunt, as the former leader repeatedly insists.

"The idea that the president has complete authority to declare any document personal is... ridiculous," Barr told Fox.

If even half the indictment is true, "then he's toast," Barr added. "It's very, very damning."

The charges, brought by Department of Justice Special Counsel Jack Smith, each carry up to 20 years in prison.

In its indictment, the Justice Department described evidence including an audio recording from a July 2021 meeting that Trump had with an author, a publisher and two of his staff -- none of whom had a US security clearance -- in which Trump showed them what he called a "secret" and "highly confidential" document.

"This is secret information... See as president I could have declassified it," Trump said on the recording, according to the indictment. "Now I can't, you know, but this is still a secret."

Anand Mahindra Shares Video Of A Lion Moving Towards A Man, Internet Reacts

With his social media tweets, industrialist Anand Mahindra never fails to surprise us. The Mahindra Group Chairman's Twitter account is a veritable treasure trove of fascinating, motivating, and endearing stuff that can brighten anyone's day.

Similar to that, Anand Mahindra recently posted a video of a lion sneakily approaching a man riding in a jeep. He also posted a couple of questions on Twitter for his followers.

He shared the video with a caption that reads, "If you were that man: 1) What would your first thought be? 2) What would your first action be?"

Watch the video here:

Over a million people have watched the spooky video, and many of them have commented on it with their reactions.

"In most cases, lionesses are not prone to attacking humans unless they feel threatened or cornered. They are more likely to display defensive behaviour if they perceive a potential threat. If I were the man, I would choose to stay still and take in the beauty of the lady!" commented a user.

"I resist the impulse to run, understanding that such an act could trigger the lion's primal instincts, possibly transforming me into an unwitting target. Instead, I tap into the depths of my courage and remain as motionless as the nearby trees, mirroring their silent strength," wrote another user.

In replying to the question asked by the industrialist, a third user commented, "First thought: 'Oops, looks like I'm the main course on today's lion menu!'" "First action: Begin practising my best lion impersonation in the hopes of confusing the majestic creature. Roarrr!"

"If It Could Happen In 1977...": Sharad Pawar Over Opposition Unity

"If It Could Happen In 1977...": Sharad Pawar Over Opposition Unity

NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday said the opposition parties were keen on providing an alternative to the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections next year and projecting a prime ministerial face was not an issue.

Sharad Pawar, addressing a press conference here, said that he would attend the meeting of opposition leaders convened by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in Patna on June 23 and strive for putting up a joint fight against the BJP.

"A prime ministerial face is not an issue before us. Even in 1977, no one was projected as the prime minister. The Janata Party won the elections and Morarji Desai was made the prime minister," the NCP supremo said.

"If it could happen in 1977, why can't it happen now? We have the responsibility to provide the people of this country with an alternative to the BJP," he said.

Mr Pawar stressed that it was not a necessity to project a prime ministerial face in Lok Sabha elections.

"There is a need to present an alternative before the people. If we contest the elections together, we will be able to provide that alternative. The result of this will decide things in the future," Mr Pawar said.

Mr Pawar said there has been a suggestion to put up joint opposition candidates against the BJP and this issue will be discussed at the meeting in Patna on June 23.

"There has been a suggestion that where BJP is strong, if possible, non-BJP parties can field a single candidate. This will be discussed in Patna.

"The meeting in Patna will give a new direction as people want change. We will make sincere efforts to meet the expectations of the people," he said.

On incidents of communal violence in Maharashtra, Mr Pawar said the people of the state will reject such divisive politics as they did in Karnataka.

The NCP chief alleged that the BJP and its allied organisations were vitiating the atmosphere in Maharashtra "as they did in Karnataka in the name of Lord Hanuman".

"But the people of Karnataka rejected the communal agenda. I am confident that the people of Maharashtra too will not accept it," Mr Pawar said.

On threats to him over social media, Mr Pawar said he trusts Maharashtra Police and is confident that it will do its job sincerely.

UK Scrambles Jets Twice To Intercept Russian Planes Near NATO Airspace

UK Scrambles Jets Twice To Intercept Russian Planes Near NATO Airspace

British Royal Air Force fighter jets were twice scrambled over the course of 24 hours to intercept Russian aircraft flying close to NATO airspace, the Ministry of Defence in London said Friday.

RAF Typhoons based in Estonia and Swedish Gripen fighters were on Thursday evening scrambled to "intercept" a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft and a Su-27 fighter jet "flying close to NATO and Swedish airspace", the ministry said.

The Russian aircraft "were not complying with international norms by failing to communicate with the relevant Flight Information Regions (FIRs)" but "remained in international airspace and flew in a professional manner", it added.

On Friday, Typhoons were scrambled again to intercept two Russian transport aircraft flying south from mainland Russia towards Kaliningrad, a Russian exclave wedged between NATO members Poland and Lithuania.

The Typhoons were later "re-tasked to intercept" two Tupolev Tu-22M bombers and two Su-30 fighter aircraft, also flying south from mainland Russia over the Gulf of Finland and the Baltic Sea.

The Russian aircraft were again "failing to liaise appropriately with local FIRs", the ministry said.

Finnish, Swedish, Portuguese and Romanian aircraft were also involved in escorting the Russian aircraft, according to the statement.

"These intercepts are a stark reminder that the RAF is always ready to defend our skies and those of our allies, while the coordinated action by several air forces serves as a clear demonstration of the value of our international alliances," UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said.

"If Pakistan Wants To Take Relations Forward, They...": S Jaishankar

"If Pakistan Wants To Take Relations Forward, They...": S Jaishankar

India will not tolerate cross-border terrorist activities and it cannot keep aside terrorism to improve ties with Islamabad under its neighbourhood first policy, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Thursday.

He said if Pakistan wants to take the relations forward, it knows what to do, adding India has de-legitimised cross-border terrorism. The external affairs minister also described the revocation of Article 370 of the Constitution from Jammu and Kashmir in 2019 as a long-awaited step, saying it was very crucial for national security.

"I do think that what was done in 2019 was a very very crucial step in a long-awaited step for national security. The whole world used it against us. They saw it as a point of vulnerability," Mr Jaishankar said at a press conference.

"They saw it as something they should keep pressing and keep using and keep turning as a way of keeping India off-balanced. If we do not get it right, how do you expect the world to get it right," he said. Article 370 gave special powers to Jammu and Kashmir. "For us, the first thing was to remedy it at home and that is what we did in 2019. Once you sorted it out at home, then the question was how does the world react to it," Mr Jaishankar added.

He said many countries around the world now understand India's perspective on the issue.

On August 5, 2019, India announced the withdrawal of the special powers of Jammu and Kashmir and its decision to bifurcate the state into two union territories. Jammu and Kashmir had enjoyed the special status that was granted under Article 370 of the Constitution.

"We spent a lot of time getting people to understand what it was about. Our problem was that there were a lot of false narratives and much of it originated in our own country. We had to deal with it and we dealt with it," he said.

"I see no reason why Jammu and Kashmir should be denied the benefits not only of development but of globalisation that the rest of India is experiencing. I think it is their right and we should promote it," he said.

Replying to a question on India's 'neighbourhood first policy', Mr  Jaishankar said it has enhanced regional cooperation in diverse areas including connectivity, power and trade. At the same time, he asserted that India cannot keep aside cross-border terrorism to improve ties with Pakistan under the policy.

India has been maintaining that Pakistan must stop supporting cross-border terrorism to restore normal bilateral relations. "It is neither the country's sentiment nor the Modi government's thinking. If Pakistan wants to take the relations forward, they know what to do. It knows and the world knows," he said.

Mr Jaishankar made the remarks at a press conference he addressed to list the achievements of the Modi government in the foreign policy domain in the last nine years.

Maharashtra's Toy Train Not To Run During Monsoon

Maharashtra's Toy Train Not To Run During Monsoon

The Neral-Matheran narrow gauge 'toy train' will remain suspended between June 10 to October 15 for safety reasons, the Central Railway said on Tuesday.

The train services are stopped during monsoon every year for fear of landslides or stone fall.

The CR's announcement, notably, came three days after the train derailed while on the way down to Neral though no passenger suffered injuries.

Shuttle services between Matheran and Aman Lodge, the station close to Dasturi point beyond which vehicles are not allowed, will remain operational during the monsoon, the CR release said.

Six pairs of regular passenger services and one 'material special' service will be operated daily from Monday to Friday between Matheran and Aman Lodge stations, it added.

Two additional special shuttle services will be operated on weekends.

On June 3, one of the wheels of the engine derailed near Jumma Patti station, located some 95 km from Mumbai, around 5.30 pm while the train was heading to Neral from Matheran, a CR spokesperson said.

The incident took place a day after the horrific triple train crash in Odisha in which 278 people died.

The toy train, which had left Matheran around 4 pm, had 90 to 95 passengers onboard, but no passenger suffered any injury due to the engine derailment, the spokesperson said.

The train was re-railed around 9 pm and was brought back to Neral station, located at the foot of Matheran hills, by 10.30 pm.

The incident led to the cancellation of the last train from Neral to Matheran.

The toy train moves at a slow speed, and sometimes, in the case of derailment, the support staff manually lift and put a derailed coach back on the tracks.

The Neral-Matheran train route, among the few mountain railways in India, is more than 100 years old.

The 21-km narrow gauge track passes through a picturesque valley overlooked by the hill station of Matheran.

Bihar Bridge Collapse: Show Cause Notice Given To Construction Company

Bihar Bridge Collapse: Show Cause Notice Given To Construction Company

Bihar Government on Tuesday has given a show cause notice to the construction company after the collapse of the Aguwani-Sultanganj bridge in Bhagalpur on Sunday evening.

"A show cause notice is being issued to the construction company, and action will be taken against the contractors and engineers involved in the project who have already been removed. The bridge will be constructed in a time-bound manner as it is a dream project of CM," said Bihar Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav.

The bridge was constructed to link Bhagalpur and Khagaria districts over the river Ganges.

It involved a cost of over Rs 1,770 crore and was supposed to be completed by 2019. The foundation stone of the structure was laid in February 2014, by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

"When I was in opposition, I had raised the issue regarding pier number 5 of the bridge and at that time minister handed over the investigation to IIT Roorkee and later on the basis of reports from IIT a decision to demolish the pier has taken," said Tejashwi further.

Meanwhile, As the politics over the bridge collapse in Bihar gained momentum, the state Minister and elder brother to Tejashwi, Tej Pratap Yadav accused Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of demolishing the bridge.

"BJP has demolished the bridge. We are building the bridge and they are demolishing it," Tej Pratap Yadav told reporters on Monday.

On the other hand, a PIL has been filed in the Patna High Court seeking an independent inquiry into the collapse of the Aguwani-Sultanganj bridge in Bihar's Bhagalpur on Sunday.

The petitioner, Manibhushan Pratap Sengar, in his writ petition, sought an independent probe instead of a departmental inquiry and action against SP Singla Company, involved with the construction of the bridge.

The PIL also sought recovery of losses of thousands of crores to the exchequer due to the bridge's collapse.

Additional Chief Secretary for Bihar Road Construction Department Pratyaya Amrit on Tuesday said that the investigation into the collapse of the under-construction bridge in Bihar's Bhagalpur will be completed soon adding that a new bridge shall be constructed.

While talking to ANI, Pratyaya Amrit said, "We will try to complete the investigation at the earliest. We have served a show-cause notice to SP Singla and Company as to why they should not be blacklisted."

"They have been given 15-day time to reply. For serious dereliction of duty, the Executive Engineer of Bihar Rajya Pul Nirman Nigam posted at Khagaria has been put under suspension and departmental proceedings have started," the top official said.

"The Managing Director of Bihar Bridge Construction Corporation has also been show caused why there was a delay when the instructions were very clear to demolish Pier 5 completely. A new bridge will be constructed. We will try to prioritise it so that the work on this can start after the monsoon," official added.

Apple Maps will begin displaying a new topographic map with contour lines, hill shading, elevation details, and points of interest in the US. Users can also search for nearby trails and trailheads.

With WatchOS 10, Apple is also starting to pay attention to users' mental wellness. With the Mindfulness app in the latest version of the operating system, wearers can log their momentary emotions and daily moods. Users can scroll through the Digital Crown through different shapes to choose how they are feeling and describe their feelings.

Meanwhile, with the assistance of an ambient light sensor, Apple Watch can now measure the time spent in daylight. This detail will appear in the Health app on iPhone or iPad. Kids can use Family Setup to pair their Apple Watch to their parent's iPhone units.

Man Killed By 4 Including 2 Minors Over Sharing Birthday Food Bill: Mumbai Cops

Man Killed By 4 Including 2 Minors Over Sharing Birthday Food Bill: Mumbai Cops

Birthday celebrations took a tragic turn when an 18 year-old man was killed, allegedly by four of his friends, two of them minors, after an argument over sharing the food bill worth Rs 10,000 in suburban Govandi last week, a police official said on Monday.

Two of the accused, aged 19 and 22 and hailing from Uttar Pradesh, were arrested from Gujarat, while the minor boys surrendered to the police and were subsequently detained, he said.

According to the Shivaji Nagar police official, the victim had organised a birthday party at a 'dhaba' (roadside eatery) on May 31 and the food bill came to around Rs 10,000.

A dispute arose between the victim and his friends on sharing the bill, but the former settled the matter by paying from his pockets, he said.

Later, the four accused organised another birthday party and invited their friend for the event. After feeding him cake, they attacked him with sharp weapons multiple times, leaving him dead, said the official.

After the incident came to light, the two minors, aged 17, surrendered before the police, while their major friends were nabbed from Ahmedabad by the Mumbai crime branch on June 2 when they were trying to flee to their hometown Gonda in Uttar Pradesh, he said.

The underage boys were sent to a correction home, while the other two accused were arrested under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 302 (murder), said the official.
